Advancing the Elimination of Child Labour Through Alignment with ILO Standards

A significant workshop titled “Eliminating Child Labour: Alignment of National Laws and Policies with ILO Conventions” was held on January 19, 2026, by the Trade Union–International Labour Standards (TU-ILS) Committee in partnership with International Labour Organization Bangladesh and the Workers Resource Center. Leaders of trade unions, legislators, and important stakeholders came together at the event to bolster joint efforts to end child labor in Bangladesh.

Increasing Law and Policy Alignment

A platform for critically analyzing the differences between national legal frameworks and international labor standards was established by the workshop. Discussions emphasized the critical need to convert international pledges into practical national plans that can successfully end child labor, with a focus on trade union viewpoints.

Key Messages

  • Achieving significant progress in the abolition of child labor requires bridging the gaps between national laws and ILO treaties.

  • To ensure that labor laws are inclusive, rights-based, and based on the realities of workers, trade unions must actively participate.

  • For the draft National Plan of Action (NPA) to be implemented practically and successfully, flaws must be found and fixed.

  • Building a future free from child labor requires ongoing cooperation between the government, the ILO, trade unions, and other stakeholders.
